WOMAD Cape Town spotlights Heritage Day

Over Heritage Day weekend, Cape Town gears up to host a diverse variety of FREE musically themed concerts taking place at the V&A Waterfront from 23 to 25 September.
Having celebrated performing arts for more than 40 years in 30 different countries, the World of Music, Arts, and Dance (WOMAD) Cape Town festival transforms the V&A Waterfront into a culturally rich extravaganza.
The prestigious performing arts festival is set to take place from 23 to 25 September 2023 at various locations in and around the V&A Waterfront.
WOMAD festivals are famous for creating programmes that mix local and international performers, enhancing collaboration across different cultures and music styles.
Audiences can expect to see an array of talented artists from 11 countries including South Africa, Angola, Argentina, Australia, Cuba, Korea, Kenya and Spain, among others.
Cape Town's Hip Hop sensation YoungstaCPT will headline the 'Rappers Delight' segment and other local artists such as The One Who Sings (Zolani Mahola) & The Feminine Force, Mansoor Joseph, Ernestine Deane, Steve Newman, Masala Group and more will light up the stage, playing a selection of classic South African songs.

We recognise the importance of such events that bridge cultures and celebrate diversity, especially during Heritage month, which is significant to a vibrant and culturally diverse country as South Africa. This is also a platform for international and local emerging talent to gain exposure and share experiences on commonalities within their social and cultural structures. I would like to encourage all Capetonians to head over to the V&A Waterfront this Heritage Day weekend, to enjoy this unique experience,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
There is something for every arts fan with a broad spectrum of music and dance performances and a Buskers Showcase on offer over the full three days.
A significant addition to this year's WOMAD Cape Town festival is the partnership with the !Khwa ttu Heritage Day Festival 2023.
It takes place on Heritage Day, 24 September, at the !Khwa ttu SAN Heritage Centre in Yzerfontein and celebrates San culture, showcasing an exciting lineup of indigenous artists.
Performances are set to place a spotlight upon ancestral beliefs, heritage, healing, and the role of women, land issues and modern influences.
WOMAD Cape Town will also present interactive workshops from 26 to 29 September, enabling participants to engage with international musicians at various venues throughout the city.
These workshops will impart unique insights into the world of music and culture, fostering cultural collaborations and learning experiences.
